The Side Hustle Option

As well as offering your tutoring services on a freelance individual client basis, you could also work through local schools and universities.

Pros and cons

Going over the pros and cons of tutoring is important before deciding whether it’s the right option for you. The main advantages include:

  • There is always a demand for tutors
  • You can do what you love
  • There aren’t any real start-up costs
  • Lucrative pay
  • Be your own boss

One of the main benefits is that there will always be a demand for tutors. This means you’ll never really have to worry about finding work. This type of stability is rare in self-employment. So, if you’re looking for a side hustle that’s going to provide a regular income, tutoring is a great option.

You’re also allowed to do something you love. Whatever your passion, you’ll be able to tutor others provided you have the right level of knowledge. Being able to work doing something you enjoy can really improve your work/life balance.

You also won’t need to pay much in the way of start-up costs. You may need a little equipment depending on the type of tutoring you’re offering. For example, if you’re teaching music, you may need a spare instrument for students to use. However, compared to other side hustles, this is one of the most affordable to set up.

The pay is also good for private tutoring. You can set your own rates and providing they aren’t extortionate; your students will happily pay a good rate. Of course, you also get to be your own boss which is a major benefit.

So, what about the cons of tutoring? The main disadvantages include:

  • You’ll need to adapt your teaching style
  • Working hours
  • It can be slow to get going

Everyone is different, so you’re going to need to be able to adjust your teaching style to match different students. You’ll also be working mainly on evenings and weekends, particularly if you’re private tutoring students. The fact it can be slow to get started while you market your services can also be a downside.

While there are some disadvantages to consider, the benefits far outweigh the challenges. Becoming a private tutor can be a really rewarding side hustle. You can use it as an additional income, or you could build it up to become a self-employed business.
